Few people have inspired me more than Wolfgang Hess, his love and passion for Japanese gardens, his passion for teaching and sharing his view of the garden was remarkable and unreplaceable.
As a master he has meant much, but as a friend I can’t express how much I love him and how much it hurts loosing him… I love you my dear friend, how much you teached me and how much I miss you already… someday we will meet again and until then, I will treasure every smile, every hug, every moment we shared, until then…rest in peace my dearest friend.

Peace Lantern - closing event of Peace Symposium,

Peace Lantern - closing event of Peace Symposium, Peacemaking at the Intersection of Culture, Art and Nature.

On December 8, 2022 at 3:15 pm GMT, @japaninstitute of Portland Japanese Garden presented a stone Peace Lantern to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. This gift is inspired by one which Portland received from Mayor Ryōzō Hiranuma of Yokohama in the years following World War II, when the world was still reeling from this tragic global conflict.
The Peace Lantern broadcast a hopeful message of a more harmonious future and has been seen as an important step in the re-building of the relationship between Portland and Japan. Japan Institute has commissioned one of Japan’s greatest living stonemasons to create a masterfully rendered replica of the original lantern, ensuring this meaningful gesture is passed on to a new generation.
